Many parts of the "south seas" were named after James Weddell's fellow sea captains and explorers of the area. Ross, for example, was an explorer that came after James Weddell
The Weddell Sea itself is named after James Weddell a British sailor who was in charge of a whaling vessel having previously been in the navy. He first discovered the sea in 1823. It is an arm of the South Atlantic Ocean, situated south of the Falkland Islands, forming an indentation in Antarctica between the Antarctic Peninsula (a long arm reaching out towards South America) and Coats Land, its maximum width between the two being about 2,000 km (1,250 miles). The most southerly part of the sea is permanently covered by the Ronne and Filchner ice shelves, which reach to within about 700 km (435 miles) of the south pole. (The other large indentation in Antarctica - the 5th largest of the earth's 7 continents - is the Ross Sea. Antarctica surrounds the South Pole.)
