Welcome to BBC Alive!
The BBC Micro is alive and well - on the web! There are a number of sites (including
this one) devoted to this little machine which has on board sound and graphics
plus a built in version of the BASIC language. Most of the software that was released
for it is now in the public domain and there are emulators around so that you
can run the software on other platforms. Here we concentrate on some "technical"
assistance together with background information and some software.
Since the BBC micro stopped being manufactured hardware has continued to be
developed and software has continued to be written - although not in vast quantities.
The beeb (as it is affectionately known) is a versatile machine and has been put
to many uses by scientists, schools and in the home. It was and still is a durable
machine giving many years of life, being well designed and rugged - unlike some
competitors from its heyday. One of its strengths was as a communications machine
with quite a bit of comms software existing for it and indeed even today it can
be used on the web!
You can discover some of the quality of the beeb by using one the emulators
available. For a selection follow the links on the resources page. For a history
of the company that produced the BBC microcomputer you don't have to go to Acorn's
web page. Simply click here.
As the site develops watch what's here expand!
